History of the Band

Snake Gully Band performs for bush dances, street and heritage fairs, private parties, folk festivals, fund raising functions, and corporate events requiring a traditional Australian flavour.

The band was formed in 1996 by a group of musicians with a desire to sing and play traditional Australian songs— songs of the convicts, shearers, timber-getters, sailors, gold miners, swaggies, drovers, and bushrangers— the people who greatly contributed to the Australian character. Nowadays the band’s song repertoire includes original compositions, penned by our multi-instrumentalist singer Steve, as well as contemporary Australian songs.

With the assistance of the Australian Colonial and Folk Dancers the band expanded its activities to include performing for bush dances organized by the Bush Music Club. The band quickly established itself as a popular presenter of dances for novices and experts alike. Good humoured and skillful dance calling by experienced callers Pete MacMahon, Stephen Loftus, Stephen Lockwood, and Anthony Simon provided a solid foundation for the development of the band’s own dance calling skills.

We hope that one day you will catch our rhythm and join the dance.
